1st Berjaya Times Square IT Centre Juniors Open: Under-16 Result

Giant Killer Wo Chang Xi created a series of upset to win the U16 title unexpectedly. He started his campaign by defeating top ranked Tan Yong Zhao, followed by 5th ranked Liew Ashton and 3rd ranked Bausch Koh in next two rounds. He has a great escape in his Rd 4 encounter with Lee Kang Jing where he has a lost game but his opponent did him a great favour by touching the King to allow him a pawn promotion for a draw. In Round 5, his fine run came to a halt when Vinton defeated him. The title seems to be out of reach despite if he scores a win in last round because two other higher boards must end with Vinton losing to lower ranked player and Soon Heng cannot win Yong Zhao. What are the probability for it to happen? As the clocks tick away, Vinton lost, then Soon Heng drew, and now all he needs is to defeat his opponent.

17th Kepong Juniors Chess Tournament Marketing Problem?

This year edition is one of the toughest ever contested in recent years for categories like Under-10 and Under-16. The school has stopped receiving any new entries as of 25th Oct (Tuesday) when the entries stopped at 256 pax.

Over the last 4 days, many people (no less than 15 calls with an average of 2 children) are still enquiring about the event and try to get their children into the tournament but were rejected. The most common reason cited was they get to know about this event only early this week.

First and foremost, the marketing for this event via online started 3 months ago. Secondly, the organiser of this event has been marketing aggresively in many major tournaments within Klang Valley namely MBSSKL Open, Swensen Age-Group Rapid, KL Scholastics, etc. Thirdly, reminder via various websites e.g. gilachess.com, fireyrook.blogspot.com and malaysianchess.blogspot.com on this event was done about a month ago.

It is a real wonder on why the same reason "Get to know abt this event only in the last few days" was given every year. It makes one wonder whether 3 months marketing on event is insufficient in term of timeframe? OR Target audience are not spread wide enough? OR 3 months marketing on event is too long until it loses its urgency to register? OR Is it a Malaysian way on doing things? OR I also don't know why I can miss the event in the first place despite the fact it is always organised annually after UPSR / PMR exam?

MBSSKL Open 2011 Update#6

The U14 Girl's category is captured by Melanie Koo who has a clean sweep with perfect 6 wins. She has shown great maturity in her game and continue her rising momentum since a breakthrough in her game during MSSM 2011.

The U14 Boy's category is won by 11 y.o. Tan Yong Zhao who pipped tournament pre-favourite, MBSSKL top U14 player - Tan Wei Hao, on tie break. Both players have scored 5 wins and a draw. They drew each other in Round 5. An interesting fact is that Yong Zhao finished on 2nd placing last year. His achievement in this competition so far is quite impressive. Will he attempts the U17 Boy's category next year?

MBSSKL Open 2011 Update#5

The last round just over an hour ago.

The U23 Boy's category is won by Sumant Subramaniam with 5 wins and 1 draw. No one actually is playing in his league, the closest threat came from his own 13 y.o. brother, Shreyes, who is also the second seed in the category whom he drew in the last round.

The U23 Girl's category is won by Sumant's sister, Sarika, who won all her 6 games. Among her wins include scalping top seed Olivia Madhavan. After her win over the latter, it is a pretty smooth sailing for her to clinch the championship.

The U17 Boy's category is captured by MBSSKL top player, Yeap Eng Chiam, with a perfect six rounds win. His 4 nearest rivals are 1.5 points behind him. Among the four, three players have identical scores on first 2 tie-breaks, however, the third tie-break get to separate them. After tiebreak, Lim Jing Hong came in ahead of Liew Ken Yew and Kung Soon Heng. The 5th placing goes to Liew Ashton.

The U17 Girl's category is won by Goh Xin Yen despite losing her last round. She has 2 points advantage over her nearest rival before the start of the last round.

MBSSKL Open 2011 Update#4

A moment ago, Round 6 just started.

The Under 14 Boys category is fought very intensely with 4 players now having 4.5 points from 5 games. Derek vs Wei Hao, Yong Zhao vs Kah Heng. Wei Hao is leading on tie-break by 1.5 points over Yong Zhao.

The Under-17 Boys category belongs to Yeap Eng Chiam, while Under-23 Boys category goes to Sumant Subramaniam.

The Under-14 Girls category is likely to be won by Melanie Koo, while Goh Xin Yen has captured the Under-17 Girls category. Meanwhile, Sarika is likely to be crowned as Under-23 Girls Champion.

The Special Education category who played a round robin had concluded all the fixtures. Muhd Shafiq Yahya and Muhd Syarifuddin Mohd Razib win 6 games from 7 rounds. The former is crowned as the Champion by having a better tie-break.

MSSM 2011 (Chess Team) Trivia Facts

I have compiled some statistical data based solely on National Rating for general consumption. As you may not aware that the initial seeding of chess players for team category in this edition of MSSM are not line up according to their respective National Rating (i.e. did not use National Rating , instead use last year MSSM result).

So I would like to retabulate the final ranking on the scenario What if all players are seeded according to the National Rating and how they fare at the end of the competition.

The analysis for Podium finishing (based on National Rating) as below:
Cat. >> Champion, Second, Third
U12B >> top rank, 2nd highest, 3rd highest
U15B >> top rank, 2nd highest, 7th highest
U18B >> top rank, 2nd highest, 3rd highest
U12G >> top rank, 3rd highest, 2nd highest
U15G >> top rank, 3rd highest, 2nd highest
U18G >> top rank, 3rd highest, 2nd highest

Findings:
1. You hv 100% chance [sure] to finish as Champion if your team have the highest National Rating accumulated from 4 players in your Team category. WOW!!!

2. You hv 0% chance to finish as Champion if your team ARE NOT with highest National Rating accumulated from 4 players in your Team category. JUST TOO BAD???

3. You hv 100% chance [sure] to finish on podium if your team have highest National Rating accumulated from 4 players in your Team category. WOW!!!

4. You hv 100% chance [sure] to finish on podium if your team are among the 2 teams with highest National Rating accumulated from 4 players in your Team category. WOW!!!

5. You hv 94% chance to finish on podium if your team are among the 3 teams with highest National Rating accumulated from 4 players in your Team category. GREAT!!

6. You hv 6% chance to finish on podium if your team ARE NOT among the 3 teams with highest National Rating accumulated from 4 players in your Team category. WORK HARDER NEXT TIME?

Conclusion:

1. Isn't this number look very sad for teams outside the "Big 3" chess powerhouse in Malaysia?

2. It is so bleak and very discouraging for those states to compete in the team event.

3. Looks like our National Rating is a superb benchmark indeed for Team event.

MSSM 2011 Final Result

What an interesting grand finale by Selangor. The team has staged a remarkable comeback on the last day of competition by putting up the best possible finishing after a disasterous Friday round and hope to improve as much as they could in the team categories standing.

After completing 5 rounds of team categories, Selangor is just in the running for 2 Silver and a Bronze but they end up winning 2 Silver and 3 Bronze which will contribute significantly to the points system. Also, WP improve from 4 Gold, 1 Silver and 1 Bronze medals before today to 4 Gold and 2 Silver medals. While, Penang grab 2 Gold and 2 Silver medals as compare to 2 Gold, 1 Silver and 2 Bronze position a day earlier.

The real stunning performance for Selangor come from the individual categories where they improve from 2 Gold, 2 Silver and 2 Bronze medal positions on Friday to 3 Gold, 3 Silver and 1 Bronze medals in the end of competition. The individual players from WP have mixed result in the final round where none of their Individual player finishes on podium. This does not augur well for them to collect sufficient points to capture the Overall title. As of press time, no news on whether which State emerge as the Overall Champion for Chess, MSSM 2011.

The breakdown on medal winners at the end of competition as below:- (Gold, Silver, Bronze)

U-12 Boys Individual >> Kedah, Selangor, Penang.
U-12 Girls Individual >> Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Penang.
U-15 Boys Individual >> Penang, Selangor, Kedah.
U-15 Girls Individual >> Selangor, Kedah, Sarawak.
U-18 Boys Individual >> Selangor, Perak, Selangor.
U-18 Girls Individual >> Malacca, Selangor, Pahang.

U-12 Boys Team >> WP, Penang, Johor.
U-12 Girls Team >> Penang, WP, Selangor.
U-15 Boys Team >> WP, Selangor, Johor.
U-15 Girls Team >> WP, Selangor, Penang.
U-18 Boys Team >> Penang, WP, Selangor.
U-18 Girls Team >> WP, Penang, Selangor.

Medal tally after 6 rounds competition:-
WP >> 4 (Gold), 2 (Silver), 0 (Bronze);
Selangor >> 3 (Gold), 5 (Silver), 4 (Bronze);
Penang >> 3 (Gold), 2 (Silver), 3 (Bronze);

Kedah >> 1 (Gold), 1 (Silver), 1 (Bronze);
Malacca >> 1 (Gold), 0 (Silver), 0 (Bronze);
Negeri Sembilan >> 0 (Gold), 1 (Silver), 0 (Bronze);
Perak >> 0 (Gold), 1 (Silver), 0 (Bronze);
Johor >> 0 (Gold), 0 (Silver), 2 (Bronze);
Pahang >> 0 (Gold), 0 (Silver), 1 (Bronze);
Sarawak >> 0 (Gold), 0 (Silver), 1 (Bronze);

If the calculation of points are based on the standard Merit-based system use in other sports at National-level/ Regional-level event i.e. Gold = 5 points, Silver = 3 points, Bronze = 1 point, then

Champion >> Selangor with 34 points;
2nd >> WP with 26 points;
3rd >> Penang with 24 points.

OR

If calculation is based on Olympic System (which favour Best of the Best aka Gold), then
Champion >> WP with 4 Gold medals;
2nd >> Selangor with 3 Gold medals plus 5 Silver medals;
3rd >> Penang with 3 Gold medals plus 2 Silver medals.

However, Chess in MSSM does not adopt any of these systems. Well, Chess in MSSM has its own way of calculation where points are awarded even to the last placing finisher in any given category. As from my understanding, this unique system (which is not based on merit way of calculation) is designed to encourage minor state in chess to send teams to take part in the annual event. So, every state can go back home with some points eventhough no medal is won by the contingent and able to explain to the respective Education Dept that they are not doing too badly and can improve their peformance in future editions.

MSSM 2011 After 5 Rounds

In this post, KL shall be renamed to WP (Wilayah Persekutuan i.e. KL plus Putrajaya but exclude Labuan) although all reps are from KL.

All categories except (U15 Boys Ind and Team) have completed 5 rounds with 1 more round to play.

The breakdown of medal contenders into the last round as below(Gold, Silver, Bronze):
U-12 Boys Individual >> Kedah, WP, Penang.
U-12 Girls Individual >> Selangor, Selangor, Sarawak.
U-15 Boys Individual >> Penang, Selangor, Kedah [6 rounds completed].
U-15 Girls Individual >> Kedah, Selangor, Perak.
U-18 Boys Individual >> Selangor, Perak, Selangor.
U-18 Girls Individual >> Malacca, Pahang, Selangor.

U-12 Boys Team >> WP, Johor, Penang.
U-12 Girls Team >> Penang, WP, Johor.
U-15 Boys Team >> WP, Selangor, Johor [6 rounds completed].
U-15 Girls Team >> WP, Selangor, Penang.
U-18 Boys Team >> Penang, Johor, WP.
U-18 Girls Team >> WP, Penang, Selangor.

Medal contenders as at 3rd June 2011, 8pm:-
WP >> 4 (Gold), 2 (Silver), 1 (Bronze);
Penang >> 3 (Gold), 1 (Silver), 3 (Bronze);
Selangor >> 2 (Gold), 5 (Silver), 3 (Bronze);
Kedah >> 2 (Gold), 0 (Silver), 1 (Bronze);
Malacca >> 1 (Gold), 0 (Silver), 0 (Bronze);
Johor >> 0 (Gold), 2 (Silver), 2 (Bronze);
Perak >> 0 (Gold), 1 (Silver), 1 (Bronze);
Pahang >> 0 (Gold), 1 (Silver), 0 (Bronze);
Sarawak >> 0 (Gold), 0 (Silver), 1 (Bronze);

This WP team have take the Driver seat for the Overall Title based on the superb performance in Round 5 from the 6 categories (Team) with 4 Gold medals (U15 Boys is confirmed, U12 Boys and U15 Girls and U18 Girls are 99% secure). Both Selangor and Penang have failed in Round 5 and thus the Overall Champion title are now within the grip of WP.

WP would have crowned as the Overall Champion if the results are based on the Gold-Silver-Bronze medal tally since WP will take home a minimum number of 4 Gold medals. However, MSSM way of calculation is based on points system e.g. Champion = 10 points, Second = 8 points and continue down to the last placing in the category = 1 point. As I have mentioned earlier in my previous post, WP needs to improve the Individual result eventhough their players are not in contention for top three placing.

What a fantastic performance from WP in previous round!? How come both Selangor and Penang collapsed - Can either team stage a remarkable recovery in tomorrow last round? Or WP captures the Overall Champion title and Chess supreme stay within Klang Valley for the 8 consecutive years after reinstated back into MSSM Programme in 2004.

MSSM 2011 Medal Contenders

Most of the categories have conducted 4 rounds with 2 very important rounds to go.

The breakdown of medal contenders as below(Gold, Silver, Bronze):
U-12 Boys Individual >> Malacca, Kedah, KL.
U-12 Girls Individual >> Selangor, Selangor, Penang.
U-15 Boys Individual >> Penang, Selangor, Kedah. [After 5 rounds]
U-15 Girls Individual >> Kedah, Penang, Selangor.
U-18 Boys Individual >> Selangor, Perak, Selangor. [After 5 rounds]
U-18 Girls Individual >> Malacca, Selangor, Pahang.

U-12 Boys Team >> KL, Penang, Johor.
U-12 Girls Team >> Penang, KL, Selangor.
U-15 Boys Team >> Selangor, KL, Perak.
U-15 Girls Team >> KL, Kelantan, Penang.
U-18 Boys Team >> Penang, Johor, KL. [After 5 rounds]
U-18 Girls Team >> Penang, KL, Perak.

Medal contenders as at 3rd June 2011, 2pm:-
Penang >> 4 (Gold), 2 (Silver), 2 (Bronze);
Selangor >> 3 (Gold), 3 (Silver), 3 (Bronze);
KL >> 2 (Gold), 3 (Silver), 2 (Bronze);
Malacca >> 2 (Gold), 0 (Silver), 0 (Bronze);
Kedah >> 1 (Gold), 1 (Silver), 1 (Bronze);
Perak >> 0 (Gold), 1 (Silver), 2 (Bronze);
Johor >> 0 (Gold), 1 (Silver), 1 (Bronze);
Kelantan >> 0 (Gold), 1 (Silver), 0 (Bronze);
Pahang >> 0 (Gold), 0 (Silver), 1 (Bronze).

Looks like Penang is on course to dump Defending Champion Selangor to win the Overall title. Will KL do Selangor a big favour in Round 5 battle since KL is paired against Penang in several categories. While, KL has an outside chance in the Overall title race but their representatives in some Individual categories who are not performing up to expectation must win the remaining 2 rounds.

The medal analysis listed above is based solely on the current position after completing this morning round. It should not be misconstrued as my personal analysis or opinion on the medal standing in the ongoing MSSM 2011. May the best performing state collectively be the Overall Champion!

MSSWP Chess Final 2011 (Lower Secondary Schools)

The 3 days individual event was concluded on last Friday. The full result yet to be posted on the MSSMKL blogsite, so here is a snap shot of the top winners list:

Under-15 Boys
Champion >> Mohd Faizal Roslan
Second >> Tan Jun Feng
Third >> Tan Wei Hao
Fourth >> Albert Ang

These 4 students are the strongest same category quartet in the KL team. It is nice to see them finished inside top 4. Less headache for the Selection Committee of MSSWP to finalise the 6 boys for this category. To achieve this result, both Faizal and Jun Feng have to dispose off their respective "lesser in experience" opponent in Round 7 which they actually did it, while Wei Hao and Albert played to a draw. It is anybody guessing on the remaining two names for this category.

Under-15 Girls
Champion >> Wendy Tan Li Ting
Second >> Camilia Johari
Third >> Natasha Kavina Sundra Rajoo
Fourth >> Pavitranayagi Jayamurthey

I heard from sources (I yet to verify it with MSSWP Organiser) that All except the third placing girl have gain automatic qualification spots into the KL team, while the third who came in third has to go through playoff with 7 other girls for the remaining 3 spots.

Sri KL emerges as the New Champion in Individual and Team for the U-12 Boys Category of MSSD Petaling Perdana

After a gruelling neck-to-neck race with SK Bukit Jelutong "A" team from Round 1 until the finishing line, Sri KL has emerged as the New Champion for the Petaling Perdana Zone. Sri KL is the third champion school since the reinstatement of chess into MSSM backed in 2004, after SJK(C) Lick Hung won them from 2005 to 2008, followed by SK Bukit Jelutong in 2009 and 2010.

At the end of Round 7, Sri KL "A" team was leading SK Bukit Jelutong "A" team by half point from the total scores of 4 players. Then, a disaster struck Sri KL on Round 8 where their students could only manage to add 2 points from a maximum 4 points, while SK Bukit Jelutong "A" team contributed 2.5 points to bring both schools level in points into final round. The Sri KL boys did well to collect 3 points in the last round to be crowned as the New Champion.

As for the Individual Championship, Daryl Wong of Sri KL was the sole leader of the tournament after 6 rounds with all wins. However, he suffered an unexpected lost at the hand of Lee Zhi Wei from SJK(C) Ladang Hacroft who was trailing just half point behind. So, Lee was the new leader after 7 rounds. Then, the same thing happen to Lee when he lost unexpectedly to Muhd Faqih of SK Bukit Jelutong on 6 points. This has throwned the race wide open into the last round with 4 students with 7 points.

The tournament witness a mouth watering clashed between the top two seeded players with Identical Nat. Rating of 1363 in the final round. While, two other boys from Bukit Jelutong "A" team played each other since both of them had lost to Daryl in earlier encounters, Faqih won the game and claimed the Silver medal. As for the game of the event, Daryl won it and won the Championship title since Daryl had defeated Faqih in today earlier round. Meanwhile, Lee took the Bronze with 7.5 points by defeating Lim Rong of Sri KL. Fahim Saleh of Bukit Jelutong "B" team took the last qualifying spot by obtaining 7 points with superior tie-break among a bunch of students on same points.

MSSWP Chess Final 2011 for Secondary Schools Begin....

This year the MSSWP organiser has reintroduced the team category for boys and girls. There are 24 schools each coming from 4 zones in Kuala Lumpur competing in the team category.

The pre-tournament favourites for the Girls category are SMK Kepong Baru and SMK(P) Convent Sentul. The former is parading three national players, while the latter has two national players. Two other schools have one national player in the team.

The pre-tournament favourites for the Boys category are SMK Kepong Baru, SMK(L) Methodist, SMK Aminuddin Baki (hosting school) and Sek Wesley Methodist. All the schools in this list have the service of national players as well as MSSM players. One of these schools did not even field their two national players in the team (who will be competing in Individual only starting from tomorrow as one of the favourites to qualify representing KL in MSSM this year) to allow other students from the same school to compete. Many other schools "would have die" for the service of national players.

CTEP Camp June 2011

For the first time in my 8 years as a full time Coach, I will be collaborating with my sifu in chess, Coach Seto, and Creative Chess Enterprise, Coach Balen. It is a unique experience to team up with my sifu together with my comrade in chess organisation. With our proven track record in grooming dozens of young children till represent the country, we are putting together a powerful chess training excellence programme camp on 6th & 7th June 2011 for children who inspire to represent Malaysia one day.

In Malaysia, many chess companies / academies / private enterprises have conducted chess camps actively in the past 5 years especially during the school holiday. From the research done, many chess camps just belong to "having some fun" camp category. So, I didn't want to associate with such a camp and would I say will not collaborate with parties in doing such camps. Therefore, I conduct CTEP camp for my own students only, no outsider is allowed.

Why am I collaborating with Others for the first time? It all began from a casual chit chat I had with Coach Balen in one of coffeeshops in town. He was telling me " this and that" on the camps he helped out others. Basically, those are the same reasons (in not many words) why I didn't collaborate with others. So I popped a question, why not you run one yourself? The rest is history. Here, we present to you a chess camp that we called Chess Training Excellence Programme camp.

How is this CTEP camp different from those "having some fun" camp?

1. The camp material will be customised manually based on the students chess understanding / level.

2. The camp material is extracted from a customisable self-develop methodology which is proven to produce more than 3 dozens of children (not just one individual, or 2, may be 3, 5, or 10 individuals) from the rudimental level like just knowing how pieces move until an expert level of representing the country.

3. The coaches share the same kind of believe on what are the best chess ingredients and what it takes for children of rudimental chess knowledge to grow.

4. Feel free to give me a call @ 012 - 298 4922 if you want to know more.
